CDC Releases 2024 Adult Immunization Schedule

Recently the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released changes to the 2024 adult immunization schedule. These include new COVID vaccine recommendations; among them that all adults should receive at least one dose of the updated vaccine.

Elsewhere, shared clinical decision-making is recommended for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccination with either Abysvo (Pfizer) or Arexvy (GlaxoSmithKline) for adults aged 60 or older.

The “special situations” section of the guidance on RSV vaccines describes shared clinical decision-making recommendations for vaccination among people aged 60 and older. The guidance also includes a new note describing risk factors and medical conditions that healthcare providers should consider in assessing each person’s risk for severe RSV and weighing benefits of vaccination.

There are no major changes regarding other vaccine recommendations for older adults. However, there were minor edits regarding routine pneumococcal vaccination and special situations to provide clarity or guidance and minimum intervals between doses.
